Sometimes, the machine we need to install linux is quite simple, say, no floppy or CD drive, or not support USB key boot. How to install linux in such situation becomes a FAQ. We provide a way to make it easy to install linux without floppy ,CD or USB key booting, on a machine with windows(>=2k).(Using Fedora as example)

1 Grub for dos

This software is the key of my solution.It is located in:

In fact, grub for dos include grub for dos and grub for NT loader. we need grub for NT loader only.

first, we download grub for dos, decompress it in windows. There is a file grldr and a directory boot.copy them to then directory which ntlddr located(usually c:\).

Open grldr with a binary eidtor, find string "boot". You will see something like "“(hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lst", modify it according to you situation(usually you needn't to modify them).

2 ISO image

From Fedora's downloading site, download installation image. They are located in Disc 1, directory isolinux. Copy them all to boot directory(it is C:\boot, if you put directory boot on C:\). Modify boot/grub/menu.lst by adding:

title Fedora Install
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/vmlinuz
initrd (hd0,0)/boot/initrd.img

Open boot.ini of windows(beware that this file is read only), adding the following:

C:\grldr="Start GRUB"

After all of these, restart you machine.

3 Ending

After rebooting, select "Start GRUB" in menu of NT loader, then grldr will be started. in menu of grub, select "Fedora Install", then everything will begin.

You can even start linux with grldr, dicard grub in linux. By which, we can keep a clean MBR.
